Sump Pumps are used to keep a house dry from ground water seepage. A trenched drain tile around the foundation drains water into a sub-terrain sump. A water sump pump is placed into this sump to keep the water level at a proper height. The sump pump will either be a submerged or pedestal (vertical) pump. Both types of sump pumps will have a float switch that will control the sump pumps automatic ON / OFF level. Submersible pumps are quieter and tend to have a longer life because their sealed, oil-cooled motors are protected from moisture and dust. For the typical 1/3 HP sump pump, the average lift ability is 25 feet and flow capacity is about 25 gallons per minute. If you need a more powerful pump for your sump pump application, look at a 1/2 HP. Be carefully when choosing the size. If the pump is to large it will cycle on /off very often and have a shortened life.
