Hazardous location pumps with electric or pneumatic / air motors. When pumping flammable liquids or using a pump in a hazardous atmosphere, the motor being used must be EXP rated. There are many different classifications by UL for the various types of liquids or the atmosphere being used in. These classifications will determine which motor is suitable. PumpBiz has Explosion proof motors mounted to all types of pumps, centrifugal, self priming, sump submersible and made of Cast Iron, Stainless Steel or Plastic. The requirement is not that enclosures be gas-tight, but that they be designed and manufactured strong enough to contain an explosion and prevent the escape of flame or heat that could ignite surrounding atmospheres. Burned gases do escape from explosionproof equipment, but their escape path has been engineered so the temperature of the escaping gas is well below its ignition point when it escapes into the surrounding atmosphere. Also the enclosure does not explode / fragment.
Common EXP motor rating is: Class 1, Group D; Class 2, Groups E,F,G or FG. These motors will have a UL listing and designation for volatile areas.
Air / pneumatic powered motors are inheratntly suited for hazardous duty. Because air motors are self-cooling, they do not require electrical power and have no sparking hazards

Pumps and Explosion Proof motors must be installed according to NEC / NFPA and include grounding and bonding cables to prevent static electricity build up.
Diesel fuel commonly used for generators is #2 Diesel which has a flash point of about 120 degrees F. This would classify diesel fuel in NFPA standards as a combustible and not a flammable liquid. ... So fuel rooms in buildings are typically ordinary electrical areas and not explosion proof. Consult a professional before determining your particular environment.
