These UNIQUE pumps are both high quality and the lowest operation level on the market. As with ANY pump the impeller needs to be "wet" to start pumping. This pump will start pumping around 3/8" deep and pump down to the floor or just under a 1/8".  NOT automatic. Truely the lowest operating pump on the market. Low discharge connection means it will not easily tip over when connected to a garden hose on the discharge. Metal body, oil filled means longer operating life.
